Quebec election results mirror provincial identity fault lines

OTTAWA – The razor-thin results of Quebec’s election hint at the state of identity politics in the province, according to one political analyst. When the polls closed on Tuesday, the sovereigntist Parti Quebecois and the federalist Liberals were neck-and-neck at 31.9 per cent and 31.2 per cent of the popular vote respectively. The upstart Coalition Avenir Quebec was nipping at their heels with 27.1 per cent of support from the electorate.

The division mirrors the identity fault lines that crisscross Quebec society, according to Bruce Hicks, the Bell Chair for the Study of Canadian Parliamentary Democracy at Carleton University. About a third of Quebecers only see themselves as Quebecois… about a third consider themselves only Canadians…. the remaining third have a dual identity,” said Hicks, referring to results from regular polling used by academics.
